A Drinking Problem?

It looks as if women are gaining ground on men in one area that is definitely unhealthy. Women are showing significant increases in drinking and alcohol dependence. White and Hispanic women who were born after World War II report more problems with alcohol dependence.

This is troubling news for women’s health. Women are much more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol. Blood alcohol levels show a significant increase when compared to a man who consumes the same amount of alcohol. Alcohol dependence increases the risk of liver disease and some cancers. It can also adversely affect health with increase risk of automobile accidents. Alcohol can loosen inhibitions and can prevent a woman from taking precautions that would prevent unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted disease.

Why do women of this age drink more? We were raised to believe that we can do whatever a man can do. I guess many of us think we should also drink like a man.
